Your Guide to Spring Cleaning

It’s that time of year…

The snow is still lingering, but you can start to feel spring coming with those refreshing 50-degree days. As you relish in the little bits of sunlight and fresh air, you can’t help but get anxious for spring to come.

Although it’s still February, spring is coming up quick. With spring comes for some of us our favorite, but for some of us, our least favorite event…

Spring cleaning

You either got excited or cringed at the sight of that phrase. Whether you love to do spring cleaning, or you hate it, we’re going to make it easy for you with this spring-cleaning guide!

Keep reading to learn about how you should go about spring cleaning this year…

1. Take it Slow

It can be tempting to try and do all of your spring cleaning at once but try to resist this temptation.

While it can feel so nice to smell the mixture of house cleaner, fresh candles, and spring air, it’s important to pace yourself. If you try to do all of your spring cleaning in one day, you might find yourself burned out.

If you plan everything out and take it day by day, you’ll find that spring cleaning is a lot more relaxing and enjoyable. Our advice is to give yourself a week for spring cleaning. That’s right, a whole week!

While this may seem like a lot of time, if you factor in all your other responsibilities, it’s really not. Between running the kids to school and practices, working (if you’re a working parent), getting dinner ready, helping the kids with homework, and having a minute for yourself to breathe, there’s not a ton of time left in the day!

This is why you’ll find it much easier to plan for your spring cleaning to take a week.

Many of us like to be really thorough and get every nook and cranny when we spring clean and this method allows you to do so.

2. Create a Schedule

Now that we’ve decided that spring cleaning shouldn’t be a clean-your-house-until-your-hands-fall-off-all-in-one-day ordeal, we can figure out how to space our cleaning out over the week.

To start, you’ll want to get all the time-consuming, difficult jobs done first. When you get these out of the way, it makes the rest of the week easier. Trust us, it’s way easier to do complex tasks when you’re just starting out because you have the steam to do so.

Once you’ve sort of figured out the order that you want to do things in, make and print out a schedule. Hang this in a high-traffic area of your home so you’re frequently reminded of what you need to do for the day.

The more you’re reminded, the more you can take care of tasks as you go about your day!

3. Get the Whole Family Involved

As spring cleaning day approaches, it’s only right to make it a family venture.

Spring cleaning as a family can be an opportunity to bond and spend time together. Plus, it never hurts to have a few extra pairs of hands to take some of the work off your shoulders!

As you’re making out that spring cleaning schedule, add a color-coding system to determine who will take care of which tasks. If you want your kids to be excited about spring cleaning, consider taking a minute to sit down and talk with them about the chores they want to do.

You may be surprised by their willingness to help if they get to have a little bit of control!

4. Celebrate!

Spring cleaning is exhausting and taxing on everyone when all is said and done.

This is why you may find that celebrating as a family is a great way to get through it. Sure, having a clean house is a great reward for you, but your kids and significant other may not agree that that’s enough of an incentive.

So, plan an activity to celebrate the end of spring-cleaning week!

This can be anything that you and your family find enjoyable. Plan to have a day at the park as a family if you all love to be outside. Pack a picnic and spend the day enjoying the sunshine.

If it’s not quite warm enough for that, plan a movie and pizza night! Let your kiddos pick out a movie and let your spouse pick out the pizza menu. Everyone will have something they enjoy as part of the night, and it will make all that hard work worth it.

While spring cleaning can be a lot, it doesn’t have to be boring or stressful. Don’t take it all on yourself, and don’t be too strict about getting it done quickly.

Make spring cleaning an opportunity for family bonding and pace yourself. Before you know it, spring cleaning will be over, and you’ll be planning for next year!
